1. Create an Emergency Kit

Make sure your kit includes:

  • Flashlights, batteries, candles

  • First aid kit

  • Bottled water (at least 1 gallon per person per day for 3–5 days)

  • Non-perishable food and manual can opener

  • Battery-powered radio or NOAA weather radio

  • Essential medications

  • Important documents in waterproof bags

  • Cash (ATMs may not work if power is out)

2. Secure Your Home

  • Install hurricane shutters or board up windows with plywood.

  • Bring in patio furniture, grills, and anything that could become a projectile.

  • Reinforce garage doors and check roof for loose shingles or damage.

  • Trim dead tree branches and clean gutters.

3. Plan for Power Outages

  • Have a backup power source (generator or battery backups).

  • Charge all devices and portable power banks.

  • Unplug sensitive electronics to avoid damage from power surges.

  • Know how to manually open your garage door.

4. Know Your Evacuation Plan

  • Know your zone and whether you’re in a mandatory evacuation area.

  • Prepare your vehicle with a full tank of gas.

  • Identify local shelters and pet-friendly options if needed.

  • Have a go-bag ready with essentials in case you need to leave quickly.

5. Stay Informed

  • Monitor updates from the National Hurricane Center, local news, or emergency alerts.

  • Follow city/county emergency management agencies on social media for real-time updates.

6. Prep Your Insurance & Documents

  • Take photos of your property for insurance documentation.

  • Review your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policies.

  • Store digital backups of important files in the cloud.

7. Check on Neighbors

  • Especially elderly or those with special needs—make sure they are safe and ready.
